Both announced last week that they would open more small-format locations. In recent years, Macy's opened eight small-format stores called Market by Macy's, the company's foray into off-mall boutique-sized locations, along with a small-format Bloomingdale's concept called Bloomie's. Last October, the company announced it was expanding its small-format stores, aiming to add 30 locations by the end of 2025. Meanwhile, Best Buy is set to overhaul its in-store experience for customers as it also eyes a retail landscape where small-format stores are becoming more prevalent. "Second, we will test our ability to close a large-format store and open a small-format store nearby, thereby maximizing physical store retention through convenience."

Lowe’s: The home improvement giant projected total sales of $84 billion to $85 billion for 2024 in fourth-quarter results reported on Tuesday. Mortgage rates edge closer to 7%, dampening start of spring homebuying seasonUS mortgage rates climbed for the fourth week in a row, inching closer to 7% just as peak homebuying season gets underway, reports my colleague Anna Bahney. “Mortgage rates continued their ascent this week, reaching a two-month high and flirting with 7% yet again,” said Sam Khater, Freddie Mac’s chief economist, in a statement. Since reaching a 20-year high of 7.79% in October, mortgage rates have been slowly falling. But in recent weeks, as the market absorbs expectations that the Federal Reserve will not cut its benchmark lending rate until later this year, mortgage rates have trended higher.

For this fiscal year, Best Buy anticipates revenue will range from $41.3 billion to $42.6 billion. In a news release Thursday, CEO Corie Barry said Best Buy expects the coming year to be one "of increasing industry sales stabilization." That metric is expected to improve in the coming year, as Best Buy benefits from changes to its annual membership program, a newer moneymaker for the retailer. Like home improvement companies, Best Buy saw outsized spending as shoppers were stuck at home. Shares of Best Buy closed at $79.68 on Wednesday, bringing the company's market value to $17.16 billion.

For companies that specialize in this area, like Best Buy, that has contributed to several years now of sluggish sales. AdvertisementBeyond the pull-forward effects, Best Buy CEO Corie Barry laid some of the blame for the continuing sales lull at the feet of tech brands. Indeed, tech companies haven't exactly inspired shoppers to race into their nearest Best Buy for an upgrade, especially when they could buy tickets to a Taylor Swift concert instead. Other tech companies are tossing some bold ideas at the walls too. Either way, whatever the next buzzy tech may be, Barry says Best Buy would love for you to come check it out in their stores.

Read previewYes, "the Taylor Swift effect" is real. "Uber definitely ups its game for Taylor when she comes to town," Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi said in a Wednesday interview on CNBC's "Squawk Box." AdvertisementUber isn't the only company to make note of the "Taylor Swift effect." Not every company is happy with the Taylor Swift hype, however, Best Buy CEO Corie Barry said in October that consumer spending on Swift's concerts may be lowering her company's profits. "When you're talking about billions of trips, we're almost at 10 billion trips, you know Taylor Swift is a positive but it's not enough to show in the overall trends," he said, discussing Uber's fourth-quarter earnings.

In his new book “The Black Ceiling” Woodson, a former attorney, sheds light on systemic issues within elite professional settings and the broader economic repercussions that come from underutilizing and marginalizing talented Black professionals. Woodson spoke with more than 100 Black professionals about what he calls the Black ceiling — a significant barrier that impedes career progression and creates stigma and anxiety in the workplace. Racial discomfort encapsulates the sense of unease that a lot of Black professionals experience working in elite white work settings. Selective punitiveness is the widespread perception that Black professionals get treated especially harshly when they make mistakes. Firms need to train their personnel, especially their senior white professionals so that they don’t judge junior Black professionals adversely for these challenges.

How Best Buy is beating shoplifting

But Best Buy says it has shoplifting under control. Best Buy has some inherent advantages over, say, CVS because heavy flat-screen TVs are harder to steal than razor blades. Not too many things in criminology are better understood than that.”Higher levels of staffing in stores have made a difference in Best Buy’s success against shoplifting, CEO Barry said. Best Buy has security staff at the front of stores to monitor customers entering and exiting and does not have many self-checkout machines. We don’t really have self-checkout.”Lowe’s has also attributed its low theft rates to higher staffing levels in stores.

And a steady drip of Black Friday deals, started early in November at many retailers, has also delayed the rush, as some shoppers bet that the best deals are still coming. War in the Middle East has prompted officials to take extra precautions at airports and shopping malls across the United States and along the route of New York's signature Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. A quintessential American rite, Thanksgiving brings together family and friends for turkey dinner and watching the parade and American football on TV. It also marks the most intense week of the year for travel and start of the holiday shopping season on Black Friday, the day after Thanksgiving. but slower economic demand has retailers concerned that the holiday season could prove lackluster. For many Native Americans, however, Thanksgiving is a day of dark reflection about the genocide that followed.

Best Buy, Lowe’s and Kohl’s all reported sales declines during their most recent quarter Tuesday and are forecasting holiday sales to drop from a year ago. In 2021, Holiday shopping sales spiked by 14% and grew by a healthy 5% last year. But Moody’s Investors Service said in a report today that consumers are “losing spending steam” and holiday sales will grow by just 1% to 3% this year. “Retailers offering a combination of value and non-discretionary essentials will see their sales outperform the broader retail industry this holiday season,” according to Moody’s. “One trend that’s sticking is a longer holiday season.

Retail executives generally agree that retail theft is worse than they've ever seen. Even so, leaders from Costco, Lowe's, Best Buy, and Tractor Supply have said their businesses aren't so affected. The companies have five striking similarities that are helping them win the war on retail theft. "Organized retail crime is worse now than I've ever seen it," Tractor Supply CEO Hal Lawton told Insider in August. Meanwhile, a typical Tractor Supply location may have as many as eight people working in a relatively small, 20,000 square-foot store.
